Store Tours With Hannibal First Graders

"I spy a Macintosh apple in the juice section!"
"I spy a tomato in with the ketchup bottles!"
" I spy...a 6 foot banana!"

Shopping at the Village Market IGA in March is a little more interesting than other months. Why are there fresh fruit and vegetables on the shlves with canned fruits, juice, and condiments? Because if you want to grab a first graders attention, you have to PLAY GAMES!

Every year when the first grade store tours come around, the Village Market IGA tries to think of something for the 5-A-Day presentation that will compete with the Bakery part of the tour, decorating cupcakes. A few years ago the Village Market IGA bought a 6-foot banana suit that did catch the attention of the first graders, but how does someone keep it for 20 minutes? This year, by placing the fruit and vegetables throughout the store, the children are able to play the game "I spy."

Supporting the tours, our IGA supplier Bozzuto's donates a banana for every child to take back to school, further promoting the idea of fruit for snacks. The kids also go home with a 5-A-Day chart to hang on their refrigerator at home, every time they eat a piece of fruit, vegetable, or drink a glass of juice, they just place a sticker on the chart.

"This tour reinforces how many different places in our store the kids are able to buy fruit and vegetables to meet the 5-A-Day challenge," states Jim Mirabito, storeowner. "The next time they are in the store with their parents, they have a personal connection to the store."

Hannibal Village Market IGA has been a family owned supermarket business since 1928 and is now operated by a third generation of the Mirabito family. Joining IGA in 1994, Jim Mirabito was named IGA retailer of the Year in 2002 and had maintained IGA's Five Star status ever since. Located just south of Lake Ontario in Upstate New York the store is supplied by Buzzutos, Cheshire, CT.
